Medical Billing - Troubleshooting Installation
It would be so nice if when you got your medical billing software, if it would at least wait until you started to use it before it gave you problems. Unfortunately, many of your most common problems involve the actual installation and running of the software itself. Sometimes just trying to get the welcome screen to show up is a major challenge. In this installment, we're going to cover the most common installation and operational problems and offer some tips for solving.
The first problem people run into is that the software simply won't install. The first thing you need to do when this happens is to read the manual that came with the software to see what the system requirements are. If for example, the requirements say "Must have Windows NT, 2000, or XP" and you're running a MAC, well, your software is certainly not going to run. Don't laugh. People buy things without reading the system requirements.
Another reason a piece of software won't install is because the installation program itself may be corrupt. It does happen. If you expect this is the case, having exhausted everything else, contact the company and have them send you another copy of the software.
Another problem is with memory. Most medical billing software is so extensive that it requires a lot of memory to run. So, if your software says that it requires 256 meg of RAM to run and you're running a system with 64 meg, the chances of your software running at all are slim to none.
Sometimes, the problem with the software not running is that your display is not set properly. Because medical billing software uses screens with a lot of information on them, many of them require screen resolutions of greater than 800 x 600. If your screen resolution is set too low, you may get a message saying that the software won't run at this resolution. This is easily resolved by changing the resolution of your monitor.
Sometimes, a piece of medical billing software won't run because during installation there were a number of other programs open. You will notice that when you install most Windows based software, it will tell you to close all programs prior to doing this. Some people just ignore this and run the installation anyway. What happens is that the registry doesn't get updated properly because certain files were in use and couldn't be accessed. So make sure you install the program with all programs closed, including your virus protection and firewall.
It is also not uncommon for a medical billing program not to run because your network isn't set up properly. If the program has to access database files that are stored on the network and the network connections are not right, the program can't connect to the network, thus making it so that the program also cannot access the database files. If this happens, literally nothing works. At best you may get as far as the welcome screen.
This checklist is by no means all exhaustive, but these are the most common problems you will run into when installing and running your medical billing software.
